L'opera "Voyage autour de ma chambre" venne pubblicata per la prima volta nel 1794, la prima edizione italiana Ë del 1823. De Maistre fu costretto, per un duello proibito nel 1790 a 42 giorni di arresti domiciliari. L'opera Le lepreux de la cité d'Aoste" è ispirato a una storia vera accaduta nella città d'Aosta nel 1797, narra di un uomo malato di lebbra che venne rinchiuso nella Torre dello spavento oggi nominata Torre del lebbroso.
