Il volume dedica ampio spazio alla dimensione filosofica, politica e letteraria della sua opera, con l’obiettivo di emanciparlo da letture semplicistiche. Leogrande ha saputo svolgere una critica del presente senza fughe consolatorie nel passato o nella torre d’avorio della cultura, ha insistito sulla prospettiva della nonviolenza come risposta all’egemonia della disumanizzazione e ha indicato nel socialismo la strada da percorrere per fuoriuscire dalla barbarie capitalista. Il Sud, allegoria di questi processi, ha costituito un osservatorio permanente dei disastri italiani e dei conflitti ingiustamente dimenticati o messi da parte.
