Boards with gilt borders, arabesque corner pieces and central vignette; spine with gilt linings. All edges gilt. = A fine, deluxe copy of the botanical-physiological thesis of the famous Dutch botanist and rediscoverer of Mendel's laws, Hugo de Vries (1845-1935). In 1869, he received a gold medal for his answer to a prize question from the University of Groningen concerning the influence of temperature on roots. . De Vries received his doctorate on this subject in 1870 (this thesis). De Vries was a professor of botany at the University of Amsterdam and, in 1901, one of the three rediscoverers of Mendel's laws and founders of modern evolutionary biology. Hugo de Vries became famous for his mutation theory and the concepts of mutation and gene were coined by him. He initially called the carriers of hereditary traits pangenes, following Charles Darwin's pangenesis hypothesis, which he questioned in this work (proposition VIII). He and Charles Darwin became correspondents. The 20 "Stellingen" (propositions) are integral part of this publication, being separately page-numbered and bound in the rear. Pictorial bookplate of the Dutch plant physiologist H. F. "Frits" Bienfait mounted on the front pastedown. Tiny library label in the spine top, otherwise, a fine, clean copy.
