"The Chinese are the only Asian people who, before modern times, used chairs and raised furniture and did not sit on mats, cushions or carpets. It is known that this development in Chinese domestic culture occurred only about one thousand years ago, before which time the Chinese also sat on the floor in what is now the Japanese manner. As far as is known to the author, this is the first systematic study of the development of the chair in China based on original literary authorities and authentic archaeological and pictorial sources. It is illustrated with material taken from the earliest known pictures of chairs in China, also included is comprehensive notes amd references to Cinese text as well as a glossary of Chinese terms."
